Gregory Manchess, Above the Timberline

Just checked this delightful picture book out of the library. It's an adventure story set in that steampunk world that's half far future, half 1880. The story is nothing special, even deliberately made to be like 1930s pulp fiction.

But the pictures!

Manchess can paint, and he has a great feel for the necessary details.

Lots of Ice Age fauna, with obligatory half-tame polar bears.

Lovely.

And creepy, too. I've had great fun these past two days sharing this with all my sons.
