The Gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera. The villa was designed by the French architect Aaron Messiah, and constructed between 1905 and 1912 by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild. It now belongs to the Institut de France and is open to the public.

The interior is about what you would expect.

The art collection includes lots of Sèvres porcelain, Meissen figurines, Rococo paintings, and the like, but they do also have this wonderful Gothic room.

The glory of the estate is the gardens.

Besides the formal garden behind the house

there is a Japanese garden,

a "lapidary garden" full of medieval stonework,

a Florentine garden,

and an exotic garden full of cacti and the like.

Seems like an amazing place.
